About

Japa System, originally from São Paulo (Brazil), moved to Feira de Santana (Bahia) at the age of 8. At 12, he found his path in music, which would soon become his profession.

Japa grew up surrounded by Afro-Brazilian culture, rhythms, movements, and colors, and from a young age, he showed a special aptitude for percussion, experimenting with empty cans and his mother’s kitchen utensils.

As a young man, he became a student at Pracatum, a social project created by musician Carlinhos Brown, a reference in training young people and adults in the cultural production chain. This experience provided him with advanced technical knowledge.

Since 2001, Japa System has performed in over 20 countries, sharing the stage with several international artists such as “S.O.J.A.” and playing at renowned international festivals like Lollapalooza, Rock in Rio, and others.

In Brazil, the musician has been part of several bands, including Terra Samba, Mc DaGanja, Armandinho Dodô e Osmar, in addition to Timbalada and Baiana System. His time with these bands earned him the 28th Prêmio da Música Brasileira and a Latin Grammy in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

With a natural talent for sound experimentation, Japa blends electronic and organic instruments, creating the Nave System: an exotic setup that mixes timbal, atabaques, synthesizers, samples, and unusual objects like buckets, frying pans, and even tree bark and animal hide. The electronic beats, combined with cultural elements such as capoeira, candomblé, samba duro, and samba de roda, result in a creative, unique, and innovative style.

In 2021, Japa released his first solo album, Sistema Percussivo Integrado, featuring collaborations with Carlinhos Brown, Bnegão, and Larissa Luz.

Currently pursuing a solo career, the artist has toured in more than 10 countries, including Indonesia, Canada, Spain, and Portugal, bringing the art of Bahia to the world.
